Fiddler v2.2.7.5 Released

Fiddler v2.2.7.5 has been released in advance of my talk at PDC later this month. If you’re using Fiddler in an interesting way, or have another suggestion for a tip, trick, or addon that I should share with the PDC audience, please send me a note!

The biggest change vs. v2.2.4 is that the new version will run as a 64bit application when run on 64bit Windows. This enables Fiddler to run much longer before “out-of-memory” errors occur (as these are typically actually “out-of-address-space” errors). The only downside is that some custom Inspectors will not work because they are unable to load 32bit-only components (like Silverlight or Flash). To resolve such issues, you can force Fiddler to run in 32bit mode if you like.

Beyond the 64bit mode, the new version includes improvements to the default set of Inspectors, and a new HOSTS override UI (Tools > Hosts) which allows you to easily retarget requests from one server to another. Overall performance has been improved, and assorted bugs have been squashed.

Ever find yourself wondering why a page doesn’t work, and after much investigation, you realize that you somehow opened the page in 64bit IE? Was your annoyance compounded by the need to manually open 32bit IE and copy over the current URL to see Flash and other contain not available in 64bit IE?

(No? Okay, maybe it was just me. :-)

However, if you know anyone like me, they might like this trivial little extension.

Install x64Button

When installed, it puts an “Open in 32bit IE” icon in the IE64 toolbar. It also shows up in Manage Add-ons, so the 64-bit version of the dialog isn’t entirely desolate.

As always, bug reports, suggestions, etc, greatly appreciated.

Fiddler Extension updates

I made a few minor updates to Fiddler extensions today.

GalleryView now supports the mouse wheel correctly (scrolls thumbnails) after you click inside the Gallery.

Timeline View now allows you to click on an item in the timeline to view the session. As you mouse over a given entry, you can view the full URL and bytes sent/received counts. Sessions are ordered by ID rather than ClientConnect time. The view now also refuses to calculate timelines more than 1 day long (doing so killed CPU performance).

The SimpleFilters extension now built into Fiddler by default has been updated in Fiddler 2.1.1.4 alpha such that it saves and restores the filters between runs of Fiddler. In future versions, you will be able to save and load multiple filter profiles.

As always please give the new code a try and let me know if anything catches fire. :-)

New GalleryView Build and a .NET gotcha

A new build of the GalleryView Fiddler Extension has been posted. The new version is 2.1.0.3.

This version fixes an annoying bug: previously, when displaying an animated image, the viewer would throw an exception and display the annoying red X.

It turns out that when an image is loaded from a stream using the Image.FromStream(Stream) method, GDI+ requires the stream to be opened for the lifetime of the image. In the original build, the stream was been closed immediately after assigning the image to the PictureBox so an exception is raised when the PictureBox attempts to animate the image.

The only tip I disagree with is #13, turn off ETags. The tip neglects the fact that (for IIS at least) you can have your servers use synchronized ETags to prevent the load-balancing problem.

Fiddler Inspector API: Breaking Change Notification

In the current version of Fiddler, the HTTPRequestHeaders and HTTPResponseHeaders objects are defined in a separate standalone assembly called Plugins.dll. This was done primarily as an ease-of-use mechanism for VS2003, which doesn't have a simple way to add references to types from an .EXE from inside the IDE.

That limitation was removed from VS2005, and hence if these objects are moved inside Fiddler.exe, there will be some minor performance gains, and some extensibility and ease-of-development improvements as well.

I plan to merge the Plugins.dll types into Fiddler.exe shortly.

Please let me know ASAP if you have written or distributed custom inspectors that you are unable to recompile to the new model.

Internet Explorer Security Zones Arcana

The following is an interesting Internet Explorer issue that one of our MVPs recently noticed. He writes:

We have a group policy object that sets Zone Elevation to Prompt for the Local Computer Zone ("Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Internet Control Panel/Security Page/Local Machine Zone/Web sites in less privileged Web content zones can navigate into this zone" set to "Enabled: Prompt"). We also have disabled the Local Machine Zone Lockdown (LMZL) for Internet Explorer (under Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Security Features/Local Machine Zone Lockdown Security).

When I subsequently visit http://encompassnw.org, I’m prompted about zone elevation to “ieframe.dll” when I mouse over the “Children”, “Families”, etc. menu links on the left side of the page. What’s up with that?

Using Fiddler to view the HTTP traffic as I interact with the site, I don’t see any HTTP requests made as I hover over the menu. If there really is a navigation leading to Zone elevation, it’s not using the HTTP protocol.

At this point, I still don’t know much, but I’ve got a few hunches…

IE made a number of changes to URL handling in IE7, but I know that ieframe.dll contains the error pages that IE7 displays when a navigation fails. I suspect that the Zone elevation prompt is actually being triggered by the navigation to an error page. Unfortunately, even when I click to “Allow” the Zone Elevation, I don’t see an error page, so I can’t confirm my theory.

Now, another thing I know is that IE7 changed how Javascript-protocol URIs are handled. Specifically, we no longer allow the Javascript URI protocol to serve as an IMG source or navigation target. Hyperlinks are a special case; when a page includes a tag like <a href="javascript: runFn()">, IE7 will treat that HTML as if it were written <a href="#" onclick="runFn();">. This change helps simplify and reduce attack surface in the navigation codepath.

Using Fiddler’s “Find” feature to look for javascript: turns up http://encompassnw.org/jscripts/menulib.js, which contains the script:

document.body.insertAdjacentHTML("beforeEnd","<iframe id='"+BL+"' src='javascript: void 0;'

This may well be the source of the problem. Using Fiddler’s QuickExec box, I type bpafter menulib.js to set a response breakpoint at the download of the script file. Hitting CTRL+F5 in IE refetches the entire page and its resources, and Fiddler breaks into editing mode when menulib.js is downloaded.

Now, since I suspect that the javascript: void 0; is causing the problem, I change the script line to:

document.body.insertAdjacentHTML("beforeEnd","<iframe id='"+BL+"' src='about:blank'

... and click Fiddler’s “Run to completion” button to send my modified script to Internet Explorer. Mousing around the menus, I no longer see the Zone Elevation prompt.

So, I know how to fix the URI, and but why would a Zone Elevation occur?

When you turn off LMZL, you also turn off the feature that forces all res:// URIs into the Internet Zone. The failed frame navigation to 'javascript: void 0;' navigates to a HTML resource inside IEFrame.dll using the RES protocol. Since IEFrame.dll is on the local machine, this results in a Zone Elevation.

New beta versions of Fiddler and Fiddler2 are now available. These betas are tracked to be promoted to the official "Ship" versions and deployed to a huge number of machines via autoupdates... unless bugs are found. Please send any issues you find my way ASAP.

Both releases include a number of minor bugfixes, and the first basic implementation of the AutoResponder tab, which allows easy manipulation of HTTP requests using locally-altered files from your \Captures\Responses folder.

Fiddler2 also includes the first basic support for the IAutoFiddle interface, a new extensibility model that enables powerful extensibility via .NET; IAutoFiddle will eventually allow you to create drag/drop libraries of manipulations that can easily be shared without manipulating your Custom Rules file. Expect to hear more details about IAutoFiddle over the next few months.

In the past, you manually had to specify an upstream proxy server in order for Fiddler to use the upstream proxy.

In the new version, Web Proxy Autoproxy Detection (WPAD) is supported, which should make it slightly simpler to get started with Fiddler if your environment requires a proxy server.

I've posted a few new script samples to the FiddlerScript cookbook (see http://fiddlertool.com/Fiddler/dev/ScriptSamples.asp). The samples show how to use Fiddler to make automatic HTTP requests on your behalf.

This is an interesting use of Fiddler, and something which is quite powerful once you get the hang of it. You can basically use Fiddler as a poor-man's web-spider, creating offline versions of web photo albums, etc.

Note that if you want to dump hundreds of files at once, you'll likely run into a connection limit problem, where Fiddler will start to reject connections. You can easily throttle the requests like so...

I've posted a minor update to the latest Fiddler Beta. The primary fix is to the behavior when Fiddler traps SSL CONNECTs.

At some point a few months ago, I introduced a regression which made Fiddler hang on certain types of SSL traffic. I believe this issue is resolved in the latest update.

I'm still slogging on toward version 1.0, which should be available soon.

I've made some minor fixes to the Latest Beta.

1> Better support for installs on Longhorn. The old version crashes during setup because an ActiveX control crashes regsvr32. I'm investigating, but for now, Fiddler on LH does not have the HexView. Also, Fiddler should no longer crash when disconnecting.

2> Support for configuration of the hotkey. By default CTRL+ALT+F brings up Fiddler's main window, but apparently CTRL+ALT is equivalent to ALTGr, a modifier used by many international users. So, you can now change the hotkey via the registry.

Using RegEdit, create new DWORDs under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Fiddler:

Set Hotkey to the keycode (e.g. hex 48 is "H").
Set HotkeyMod to the modifier (e.g. 1=ALT, 2=CTRL, 8=Windows, 9=Windows+ALT, etc). Restart Fiddler and the new hotkey should take effect.

I've posted a minor update at http://www.fiddlertool.com/dl/fiddlerbeta.exe. The only significant change is making menu options available on the main menus that were previously only available on the HTTP Sessions context menu.

A new beta version of Fiddler has been posted:
